Meet the industry insiders – Q&A with Michael Olestad

Meet the industry insiders dives into the excitement and expectations from some of the brands on the official schedule for Copenhagen Fashion Week AW20, offering you a look behind the scenes.

Norwegian womenswear designer Michael Olestad is making his debut at Copenhagen Fashion Week this season. Founded in 2016, the young brand has already received international critical acclaim and been named the Norwegian designer on the rise by Dazed Magazine, and the National Museum of Norway have bought his work for their permanent collection. Excited to join the AW20 lineup, Michael Olestad underlines that “The reason why I chose to be part of Copenhagen Fashion Week is that it is the only fashion week in Scandinavia with a full runway schedule, and it works on a high level with great support from international press and buyers.”

In your opinion, what sets Copenhagen Fashion Week apart from other international fashion weeks?
The reason why I chose to be part of Copenhagen Fashion Week is that it is the only fashion week in Scandinavia with a full runway schedule, and it works on a high level with great support from international press and buyers. And at the same time it feels safe and humble. For a small brand like mine, it is important to grow steadily, but also dare to make sacrifices and take risks. And I am taking a big risk with this show now, which feels both scary and amazing. At the same time I think it is very important to preserve all the local fashion weeks, like Oslo Runway. Fashion is an art form we all need to make decisions about when we get dressed in the morning. We need to decide if we want to blend in or make a statement. The local fashion weeks are great institutions for young talent to set the agenda in their own surroundings, and we need talent to grow in every small country and city for this industry to be ready for the future.

What are you most excited about, with AW20 approaching?
The feeling of having managed to do something I thought was not possible just a few months back in time.

Could you give us a hint on what we can anticipate from your show?
There will be lots of prints, familiar shapes in new clothes and an observing and warm concept.

The Michael Olestad show takes place at 2pm
By invitation only.
