Homage to Copenhagen – Ganni
Words Line Hindsgaul
It was on a trip to New York that designer Ditte Refstrup found inspiration for her F/W 18 collection. More specifically, in an article she read about a young girl whose greatest aspiration was to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Ditte wanted to inspire ambition for a different kind of angel. A role model, an everyday Copenhagen gal. The kind with something mysterious about her, who exudes a quality you can sense but perhaps not put into words.
Among those everyday angels are muse and model Frederikke Sofie and the multi-talented Ana Kras, whose pictures of Copenhagen — from the bikes habitually chained to the city’s railings to a gorgeous plaster angle located in the museum next to Ganni’s headquarters — served as beautiful art pieces at the venue. The collection’s hero pieces included a delicate draped dress in floral-printed white satin, a blue woven mesh dress adorned with laser-cut flowers, and tiny pearls. True Ganni fans will remember a yellow version of this dress form last season, and also the jacket in snow-white shearling mixed with dark brown snake-embossed calf leather.
Colors were kept in black, pink, and serene blue, and prints sported flowers and animal stripes. Embroidered polka dots appeared on bags and tops, while images of angels decorated T-shirt and hoodies. Once again, piece after piece, Ganni delivered.
It’s difficult to say exactly what it is about Ganni. The brand is not avant-garde or extremely innovative, nor is it classic or super commercial. It has, however, found its own quirky stance, and offers a more vivid and playful take on the Scandinavian look.
