In the spirit of how she began Designers Remix 17 year ago, reworking already used materials, Charlotte Eskildsen has cast a lazer-sharp focus on sustainability for the brand’s present and future. 60 % of the SS19 collection has been produced sustainably. The 2020 target, going beyond the commendable and into pioneer territory, is 100 %.
Also a pioneer in choosing spectacular venues, Eskildsen presented her collection for next summer under “The Crystal”, Nykredit bank’s awesome piece of architecture in central Copenhagen, designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
Indeed, architecture figured prominently in the collection, shape taking center stage. No flowers, no texts, but straight colours in clean lines – ample sleeves and ample high-waisted trousers; loose coats to wear over cardigans or sweaters; short sexy skirts wrapped with a ruffle that would enliven any office; easy shirt dresses. All to wear and to be loved in wearing.
Some pieces were made of pure silk, some of certified viscose, which means a new tree is planted every time one goes to its making. Some from recycled cotton, some washed silk/viscose, some of recycled plastic bottles.
Here was lots of white — with large checks on tea towels or pure-white organic cotton with a vintage look — in pinafores or pretty, girly dresses with embroidery, lace or tiny pleats that will look cool with a chunky cardigan.
Oyster, London brick, a striking Yves Klein blue, tomato, “special pink”, and sparkling gold mesh make up the main colour scheme of Designers Remix SS19. Plus a print of a photo of petrol in a puddle, pastels swirling like a rainbow. Drenching a pleated dress and a fabulous maxi skirt. Igniting our imaginations as to what the 100 % will offer, not just in terms of sustainability, but visually and sartorially.
