Carcel is a new gen brand where quality, transparency, sustainability and activism is equally part of their dna. They’ve set up their own productions inside of women’s prisons to give women new skills, fair wages and providing an opportunity for them to support their family and save up for a crime-free future. They use materials that are 100% natural, pure, and locally sourced. Natural materials that are renewable, biodegradable and friendly to the environment. They make baby alpaca knitwear in Cusco, Peru – and a line of silk in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The designs are non-seasonal and introduced throughout the year. This way they stay relevant, avoid stock, eliminate waste and respect the pace of their unique production.
Carcel was founded in 2016 by Veronica D’Souza – and officially launched during Copenhagen Fashion Week in August 2017. Today the Copenhagen-based company counts of a passionate team of 5 people together with two local production managers and the full team of 25 women employed inside the prisons in Peru and Thailand.
